Famous People
Jean Baptiste Fourier was a French mathematician and physicist who is best known for initiating the investigation of Fourier series and their application to problems of heat flow. In 1798, Fourier accompanied Napoleon and his troops to Egypt as a scientific adviser and for the next several years he studied Egyptian antiquities in addition to his more militaristic duties. When he returned to France he compiled the materials and held various administrative posts under Napoleon who made him a Baron in 1809. In 1822 he published his work The Analytical Theory of Heat,one of the most important books of the 19th-century in which he showed how the conduction of heat in solid bodies may be analyzed in terms of infinite mathematical series now called by his name – Fourier series. Fourier's observation that some discontinuous functions are the sum of infinite series was a breakthrough that let engineers and scientists solve problems that had previously been unthinkable. Fourier is also credited with the discovery that gases in the atmosphere might increase the surface temperature of the Earth. This was the effect that would later be called the greenhouse effect.

Water is the most efficient agent having a high heat transfer coefficient and a high heat capacity. 14. For the investigation being conducted at present the lack of such data is of no importance. 15.
