A business plan provides information about a company, its objectives and how it plans to meet those objectives. With a prepared business plan, an owner has a document to show potential backers the steps to his company’s success to obtain financing.

Why Have Business Plan? A business plan is a resource of information that the owner(s) create for them and others to understand how their company is run to become profitable. A business plan is also needed to show potential sources of financing, such as bank lenders the operating practices of a business so they can determine whether it’s a good risk to invest money into the company.

Information Contained in Plan. Business plans cover a variety of topics about companies from ownership to how business expenses are paid. Some of the sections outlined in a business plan are marketing analysis, product or service description, financial projections, sales strategies and a company’s mission statement, which is a description of the values and goals of the business. A detailed business plan also includes graphs, charts and other analytical data.

Different Types. Business plans come in all shapes and sizes. The format of a business plan is determined by the owner. There are business plans called ‘mini-plans’, which contains limited but important information such as the names of the owners, product or service description and its mission statement. Working plans, which are used for company purposes, and presentation plans, which are used to show outside personnel for financing purposes, are more detailed. Business plans are created in hard copy (paper) or electronic formats.

Not Required. Producing a business plan is not a requirement to open a business. It depends on the owners and the type of businesses. For example, owners of home based businesses do not have to produce business plans unless they are looking to acquire capital from investors while companies such as corporations are required to produce business plans.

Should Contain Current Information. As a company evolves, so should the information contained in a business plan. Businesses change over time; company practices that worked five years ago are not productive and the information becomes outdated.
