UNIT III.

Degrees of comparison of adjectives and adverbs.

I. Give degrees of comparison of the following words:

Short, little, young, old, beautiful, easy, bad, handsome, tall, charming, expressive, thick, good, attractive, graceful, good – looking, delicate, slender, careful, broad, happy, lean.

II. Give antonyms to the following words and word – combinations:

The best, the strongest, the oldest, the most difficult, the tallest, the unhappiest, the best – known, the worst.

III. Divide the following words into two groups: a) adjectives forming their degrees of comparison using -er, -est; b) forming their degrees of comparison by placing “more” and “most”.

Happy, beautiful, important, simple, careful, sad, dirty, narrow, dangerous, clever, thoughtful, skeptical.

IV. Match the following adjectives in the left column with their comparative and superlative degrees.

good more most

many less best

much better least

bad worse worst

little more oldest

old older most

V. Open the brackets. Mind degrees of comparison.

a. He is (handsome) than his friend.

b. My grandfather is 5 year (old) than my grandmother.

c. Are you (happy) than me?

d. She is (beautiful) of all.

e. Is your house as (comfortable) as his?

f. She has the (charming) smile of all.

g. He is not so (lazy) as his friend.

VI. Complete the sentences using the correct form of the adjectives in brackets.

 

1. As the day went on, the weather got (bad).

2. She has been to Britain, his English is (good) than mine.

3. Which car is (good)?

4.His illness was (serious) than we thought.

5. She looks about 20, but she is much (old) than she looks.

6. Health and happiness are (important) than money.

7. This clock is 10 minutes (fast) than mine.

8. Today your marks are (bad) than they were yesterday.

9. What is the (bad) habit that you have?

10. What is the (expensive) thing that you have ever bought?

VII. Translate into English.

1. Його друг старший, ніж він.

2. Моя подруга - найвродливіша дівчина.

3. Він - найсильніший студент у нашій групі.

4. Олег не такий нудний, як я думав.

5. Чим більше він дивився на неї, тим більше вона йому подобалась.

III.Introductions. Read and learn.

Formal:

Let me introduce myself, (Kate), Mr. Black.

May I introduce myself?

Allow me to introduce myself.

Less formal:

I'd like you to meet my friend Kate.

This is Lena.

Meet my brother Andrew.

Informal:

This is my friend Oleg. Possible Replies. How do you do? Glad to meet you. Pleased to meet you. Nice to meet you. Hello!

Choose the right answer:

1. When you are introduced to someone in a formal situation you say: a) Hello. b) How do you do? c) Pleased to meet you.

2. When someone says How do you do? You reply:

a) How do you do? b) Very well, thank you. c) The same to you.

3. If you don't know whether it is necessary to introduce two people, it is better to ask one of them:

a) Are you acquainted? b) Do you know Mr. Black? c) Have you met Mr. Brown?

 

IV. Read the dialogues, learn any of them and reproduce it.
