1. — Have you chosen a book?

— Ще ні. Я шукаю цікавий детектив.

— I can recommend you this one. It's very popular.

— Дякую, але я його вже читав.

— And what about that book? It has just come in. I can not tell you anything about its

contents.

— Я її візьму. Мені треба якийсь роман Айріс Мердок (Iris Murdock). Це

улюблений автор моєї дочки.

— I appreciate your daughter's taste. Has she read "The Sandcastle "?

— Думаю, що ні. Я візьму цю книгу. Дякую. Ви були дуже люб'язні. До

побачення.

— Good-bye.

2. — Ви зайняті в четвер вранці?

— No, I am not. Why?

— Я хотів вас запросити на виставку книг.

— Sounds interesting! I accept your invitation. Where and when shall we make it?

— Якщо це вам зручно, я заїду за вами в пів на одинадцяту.

— It suits me ОК. I'll be waiting for you at 10.30.

— До четверга. До побачення.

— Thank you for inviting me. Good-bye.

3. — Who is your favorite writer?

— Дуже важке питання. Я люблю Достоєвського, Толстого і Чехова. Із

сучасних (modern) письменників я отримую задоволення читаючи Булгакова,

Платонова.

— And what about poetry?

— Є багато талановитих поетів у нашій країні. Я дуже люблю Цвєтаєву,

Ахматову і Пастернака.

— What can you say about Evtushenko?

— У нього дуже багато цікавих робіт, він користується успіхом.

— What are you reading?

— It is a book, as you see.

— Of course I see it is a book. What's the title of the book?

— It's “A Farewell to Anns" by Hemingway.

— What do you think of it?

— As a matter of feet Hemingway is one of my favorite writers. I have read all of his

novels and stories in the original.

— Any language problems?

— Sometimes I've got to look up some words in the dictionary. That's all.

— Frankly speaking Ernest Hemingway is not among my favorite writers. I prefer

detective stories and thrillers.

— Tastes differ. Don't you like John Updike?

— Now you have mentioned it I remember... Not long ago I finished his novel “Run,

Rabbit, Run".

— What do you think of it?

— It produced a great impression on me. Updike is a very talented-satirical writer.

— I fully agree with you. If you are interested in John Updike, I advise you to read

his books: “The Centaur" and “The Molt in the Eye".

— I'll follow your advice. Speaking of literature what Russian writers are popular

nowadays?

— There are a lot of talented Russian writers who are popular both in this country and

abroad.

— You mean Solzhenitzin, Nabokov, Bulgakov. Am I right?

— Yes, you are. If you ask me, my favorite Russian writer is Bulgakov.

— And what about Russian classics?

— Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy are beyond comparison. While we are on the subject... do

you like poetry?

— Yes, I do. I am fond of Pasternak and Akhmatova.
