Present day independent Ukraine has got a rather developed system of education, which in many respects answers the standards of the developed countries. The right to education in Ukraine is guaranteed by Constitution (Article 53). General secondary education is free and compulsory. Post – secondary education is acceptable to one and all.

The educational system includes over 23.000 preschool educational establishments. The basic link of the system is general educational school, of which there are 21350 now. There are state schools where education is free of charge and private primary and secondary schools where pupils have to pay for their education. This school has three stages: primary, basic and senior. There are several types of schools for gifted children. There are gymnasiums and lycees, private schools in our country. They offer programmes giving a profound knowledge in some field of study. The secondary school must secure a uniform level of knowledge necessary for every student. The core curriculum includes Ukrainian, Ukrainian Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, World Literature, a Foreign Language and other subjects. Besides, it also has optional, extracurricular courses and disciplines reflecting the school’s academic speciality or major.

Post secondary education is provided by institutions of higher learning trainings young specialists: universities, academies, institutes and conservatories, including 14 classical and 45 technological and branch universities, 30 academies and 72 institutes. Ukraine numbers a total of 1.5 million college and university students. A multilevel system of training is being introduced based on the “junior specialist B. A. – specialist – M. A.” scheme. Many academies and universities have extramural departments.

The alternative system of higher education is gaining momentum made up of non-governmental institutions.

Institutions of higher learning enroll some 12.000 foreign students, post-graduates and visiting graduates, of whom 8.000 are on Ukrainian governmental scholarship.

Ukraine cooperates with more than 50 international educational organizations, programs, and foundations.

What makes a person educated?

Of course we get education at school. The activities of the school day afford different chances for pupil's self-perfection. They provide many opportunities for deeper study and developing our talents. But school lays only the base, the foundation of our education. Here we get only necessary knowledge and after graduating the school we can continue studying in the universities, institutes, colleges or somewhere else. Not only school makes us educated persons. Reading books and press is also very important. It enriches our outlook, broadens the boundaries of our intellect, offers the opportunities to read the latest news and political discussions. TV also gives us wonderful and effective possibilities for education. Due to mass media we become better informed by watching documentaries, science programs and discussions. It is the principal role of after-school activities to deepen our knowledge in different subjects. To my mind if we want to be successful in our studies we must have the number of positive qualities of character. First of all we have to be attentive at the lessons. Attention always helps to acquire profound knowledge and to understand the material better. To make progress in all subjects we should be hard-working and persistent persons. Strong-willed and industrious people can stand up all difficulties and hardships and they have a purpose in life. So if we want to be well educated, we ought to have all these qualities in ourselves, only in these conditions we can succeed in our studies. I think that all people should be educated, because it is very useful and important. Educated persons are always ready to find a good job; they usually have a bright career. Besides, it is also much better to talk to educated, cultured and extraordinary person. I consider knowledge to be the really great power and that is why we must always increase it.
